Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act
Also called Reg X
Definition
The Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, or RESPA, is the federal law that governs many real-estate settlement and mortgage-servicing practices. Regulation X implements it. RESPA is not TILA.
In plain English
Closing a mortgage and servicing it afterward are heavily documented processes. RESPA is the federal statute that covers much of that settlement and servicing ground. TILA is a different statute about credit-term disclosures. Regulation X is the CFPB restatement of RESPA, not a second page.
Technical definition
CFPB’s official RESPA resource page identifies the statute and Regulation X and points to the main provisions, including kickbacks and mortgage servicing. That official identity is PRIMARY.
Why it matters
QWR, error resolution, referral fees, and escrow rules sit in the RESPA family. Readers need the statute page before those parts.
