Qualified written request

Also called QWR

Definition

A qualified written request, or QWR, is written correspondence a borrower or someone acting for the borrower can send a mortgage servicer to request information about the loan or to assert an error. It is not the same as the Regulation X error-resolution process.

In plain English

A borrower can write the servicer about a servicing question or a suspected mistake. Official CFPB consumer material calls one form of that writing a qualified written request. The same consumer material also names a notice of error and a request for information as other written paths. This page is the QWR. It does not publish response calendars.

Technical definition

CFPB’s mortgage key-terms page currently carries an official Qualified Written Request heading. That heading is PRIMARY. 12 CFR 1024.35 is technical context for how written error and information notices are treated in Regulation X.

Why it matters

Servicing correspondence is often labeled a QWR even when the writer meant a notice of error. The pages stay linked so the labels do not collapse.
