Error resolution
Definition
Error resolution is the federal mortgage-servicing process for a written notice that a servicer made an error. It is related to a qualified written request, but it is not the same concept.
In plain English
A borrower who thinks the servicer posted a payment wrong, started a fee in error, or made another servicing mistake can send a written notice of error. The process around that notice is error resolution. A qualified written request is another official written path that can ask for information or assert an error. This page is the error-notice process, not a calendar of response times.
Technical definition
12 CFR 1024.35 is the official Regulation X error-resolution text and is PRIMARY. CFPB’s consumer page on disputing an error or requesting information is supporting consumer context. Deadlines on that page are not copied here.
Why it matters
Servicing pages mix QWR, error notices, and information requests. Keeping the error-resolution process separate prevents those labels from collapsing.
