Verification
How to verify a mortgage lender
Short answerCheck the company's identity against official public sources, then compare those records with the lender information you were given. A match is a consistency check. It is not a safety finding, a USMI license, or an approval.
01Checklist
Official-source checklist
- Search the published USMI lender directory.
- Check NMLS Consumer Access where the company or person is in that system.
- If it is a bank, check FDIC BankFind and the relevant federal identifier.
- If it is a credit union, check NCUA records.
- Review the institution's published USMI source dates and identifiers.
- Check the relevant regulator where one applies. National banks may involve the OCC. State-licensed companies may involve a state regulator. NMLS Consumer Access is a public starting point, not a complete map of every regulator.
- Confirm the information against the company documents and contact details you actually received.
02A match
What a match means
A match means the name or identifier you checked appears in the source you opened, as that source presents it. Compare the same identifier, not a similar marketing name.
03Not a conclusion
What a match does not mean
- An NMLS listing alone does not prove the company is safe.
- USMI does not prove a license.
- USMI does not approve, recommend, or rank a lender.
- A directory profile is not a finding that an offer in front of you is accurate.
04Missing fields
What an unpublished field means
An unpublished field means USMI did not publish that item for the profile. Absence is not evidence that the institution lacks the license, activity, product, or regulatory record.
05Disagreement
If USMI differs from an official source
Use the official source for the consequential fact. Then request a correction and include the official URL. USMI reviews the request against that source before any public change.

Limits
Limits
- Official registries control their own records and coverage.
- USMI does not scrape NMLS result pages into this guide.
- Confirm the company documents you received against the official record, not against this page alone.
