Definition

A survey is a drawing that shows the lot, the house, and other structures on the property. It is not a home inspection and not a title search.

In plain English

A survey answers where the land lines are and where the building sits on that land. Lenders and title companies may ask for one. An inspection talks about condition. A title search talks about ownership claims. A survey talks about location.

Technical definition

CFPB’s key-terms heading defines a survey as a drawing of the property showing the lot, house, other structures, and improvements. That official heading is PRIMARY.

Why it matters

Closing checklists mix survey, inspection, and title work. They are three different documents.
