NMLS ID

Definition

An NMLS ID is the unique identifier NMLS assigns to a company, branch, or individual record. It is a number in the licensing system, not the public website and not the system’s full name.

In plain English

Each company or person in NMLS has a unique identifier. Public Consumer Access pages display that number. The existing nationwide-multistate-licensing-system page is the system. This page is the identifier. NMLS as an acronym already resolves to the system, not to this ID.

Technical definition

The official NMLS Unique Identifier page is the PRIMARY identity already stored in the canary source set.

Why it matters

Lender profiles and disclosures may show an NMLS ID. Readers need the identifier, not a second system page.

Important note

NMLS ID is not a second NMLS system page and not an FDIC certificate number.
