Mortgage statement
Definition
A mortgage statement is the periodic statement a servicer sends that shows the payment due and recent account activity. It is not a payoff statement and not Form 1098.
In plain English
The regular notice that says what is due, what was paid, and how much is left is the mortgage statement. A payoff statement answers how much is needed to end the loan on a chosen date. Form 1098 reports interest for taxes. Those are different documents.
Technical definition
12 CFR 1026.41 is the official Regulation Z periodic-statement rule and is PRIMARY. CFPB key terms name the servicer as the company that sends mortgage statements.
Why it matters
Payment disputes start from the statement. Readers need it kept distinct from payoff quotes and year-end tax forms.
