How can I tell who owns my mortgage?
Short answer
Ask your servicer, use an online lookup, or send a written request. The CFPB says the servicer must give you, to the best of its knowledge, the owner's name, address, and telephone number. The company you pay each month may not be the owner.
Full explanation
Many mortgages are sold, so the servicer that collects the monthly payment may not own the loan. When ownership transfers, the CFPB says the new owner is required to send a notice. If you still do not know who holds the loan, you can call the servicer using the number on the monthly statement or coupon book, look the loan up online, or write to the servicer.
The Bureau notes that many loans are owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, and both publish a mortgage lookup tool. The Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems (MERS) site can also be used to look up a servicer. This FAQ does not host those searches.
A written request can be a Request for Information or a Qualified Written Request. The servicer is obligated to provide, to the best of its knowledge, the owner's name, address, and telephone number.
