Do I need a signed purchase contract before I can get a Loan Estimate?
Short answer
No. The CFPB says you do not need a signed to apply for a mortgage and receive a . You do have to give the lender six pieces of information, including the property address and an estimated value.
Full explanation
A Loan Estimate is a three-page form that describes the mortgage you asked for. A purchase contract is a separate written agreement between buyer and seller. The CFPB states that the contract is not required to apply or to get the estimate.
The lender does need six items to issue a Loan Estimate. The CFPB's page names the property address and an estimated property value among them. It does not list the other four items on that page, so they are not restated here.
The standard Loan Estimate is not used for every product. Reverse mortgages, HELOCs, manufactured-home or mobile-home loans not secured by real estate, and certain homebuyer-assistance subordinate loans receive other disclosures.
